Any AC/DC power inverter will work for any electronic device. A car gets it power from a battery, a DC source. Your house is AC. Just make sure you get one the can handle the amount of power you laptop pulls.

The maker of your laptop may have a product at a lesser cost than the Radio Shack item mentioned. I have a Dell, and I know they offer a combination AC/12V charger (that would work in your lighter plug) for about eighty dollars. Here’s the link to the product description to see if this helps.
