a .DLL (dynamic link library) is a serious chunck to be missing. Get that recovery disk it’s your only chance on getting back up and running. If you can’t find yours borrow an XP recovery disk from a friend, anyone should work.

The HAL.dll is a very serious file to be missing. Format your hard drive and reload Win XP.

look under the forums online I know there is a compand prompt / recovery concel method to fix this.
    i think its

    copy c: windowsservicepackfilesi386hal.dll to c: windowssystem32>

this is if you have any of the service pack files installed good luck C: makes odd text in this beta ver so just replace it with a :)

Did you change something to your computer? That’s the Hardware Abstraction Layer file, and for whatever reason, it often becomes corrupted when you change your hardware, no matter how good the drivers for your device are.

If you haven’t installed any new hardware that you can remove, you’re basically going to need to re-build the primary disk with a recovery CD or WIndows CD.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news.

All of the previous answers have a valid point, but a radical approach would be to finally ditch Windows and install Linux or load both. In a dual boot situation, you can boot into Linux and fix your Windows partition.
