How can I tell if my notebook’s CD drive needs replacing?
The drive has power and I can hear it spin after putting in a disc. The drive appears in the “My Computer” screen but the disc and its’ contents do not. If I open the drive’s folder (by double clicking on the drive icon), it appears empty.
It is a Sony PCG-FR130 with a 2000+ Athlon, 40 GB HDD, and a CD-R/DVD ROM drive.

To me it seems like your cd drive’s lens is either dirty or broken. Have you tried to clean the lens using a cd drive cleaner ( cd kind)?
