Having free wireless depends on the wireless service provider. So you might have free wireless access at airports, restaurants, or universities, but not everywhere. You laptop must have a wireless card inbuilt. If you have brought a new laptop, the possibility is that it already has an in-built IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless card (since you mentioned that it is Wi-Fi- compatible). You can verify whether you have a wireless card or not using the following (assuming you have Windows XP):
1. Click on Start
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Double-click on the System icon
4. Select the Hardware tab and select Device Manager
5. Click on the + sign next to Network Adapters
6. If you see something like Intel Pro Wireless (or anything that refers to wireless), you already have a Wi-Fi wireless card!
If not, you can get an external PCMCIA wireless card. Windows XP automatically detects nearby wireles networks. Simply right-click on the wireless n/w icon in the system tray, select View Available Wireless Network and connect to the preferred network.
