iBook G3 – Getting the Most out of your iBook
In this video, see how to upgrade the RAM (PC-100) in your G3, add an Airport Card (802.11-b), and pick the best browser. See comparisons with Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Camino. See better ways to watch youtube videos and deal with flash problems. see how to disable parts of OS X Tiger that you don’t need like dashboard, spotlight, and icon preview. Thank you for your comments, but unfortunately I do not ship outside of USA and Canada!

awesome video. And since you sell these Ibooks its considered a pretty good customer support video.
You think there is a snowball chance in Miami of finding a used intel based Mac Book with OSx for $500?
(Report comment)
Ha. You won’t find a “working” Mac Book for that price..

Great video. I saw that G4 iMac at the end do you do those too? LOL. Great Video Gives some tips for my G3 and G4.

Actually that G4 iMac is what I used to make this video. I normally use an Intel iMac but it is in the shop (its under warranty, I’ll let them fix it!) , so I am currently using one of the several G4 imacs I have around.. yes, I sell those too, but only on craigslist (too much of a pain to pack and ship!)

I’d agree it must be pretty expensive. A few hundred to ship.

Hi great video!! I need to know how to solve my problem tho. I also have a iBook G3 which ive recently dug out and wanted to get to work again. At the moment it half runs ubuntu 8 and is impossible to use because theres a nuetilus error. I have a Mac Tiger DVD and i have an external usb dvd drive. When I hold option on startup the external drive does not come up. Is there another way to install Tiger? Or will I have to install the new ubuntu? Thanks
(Report comment)
The latest ubuntu’s don’t seem to work on G3 systems at all. (haven’t tried G4 yet, maybe it will work) Anyway, I am guessing your G3 has a broken optical drive? Or is it just a CD-ROM and not a DVD? If it is just because it is a CDROM, you can get on your favorite bit-torrent site and download a 4-disc CD set to install from (which should be legal since you own the DVD anyway)

just (legally) downloaded the 4 cd version of Tiger. I installed CD 1 perfectly. It got to CD 2 and the drive grunts and spins and then ejects the disc back out. I’m pretty sure the CD isnt damaged as I burned it and verified it with disk utility. I may look to install a slot loading drive. Thanks anyway

I dug out my old G3 and tossed Tiger on it, but it seems Tiger is lagging pretty bad.
Is it because I have a 600MHz CPU?
(Report comment)
Might check your RAM. You need to max the RAM out .
(Report comment)
Hrmm, you think? I have a 256 and it adds the 128 so I really have like 384mb. So I needa toss a 512 in there? I’ve been coming across a LOT of G3s and G4s.
(Report comment)
I consider 384 like a bare minimum for running Tiger.. Add a 512 and you’ll have 640 MB and it should run a lot better. However, if you disable dashboard and have a clean install of OS-X, typically you can make 384 MB work for you for basic needs.

Yea, thats what I did, but some functions are still a bit slow, but that’s fine.
