ipod itunes files to hard drive?
am currently overseas with the military, and i don’t have my laptop with me… question is- when i get home will i be able to copy all my music files from my ipod to my harddrive on my computer, as a backup incase the ipod crashes or gets lost? most of these music files i have ripped since i left home, and the only copy i’ll have access to is in the ipod.

you should be able to sync your media to your computer if you are logged under your account with iTUNES and plug up your iPOD through usb.

iPods are only intended to send iTunes music files in one direction — TO the iPod. (It’s all about copyright agreements from the music labels) If you plug your iPod into another computer and update your music, you will erase everything that’s currently on the iPod and replace it with what’s on the new computer’s iTunes list.
To do what you want you will need to use a third party application to send files from the iPod to the PC. I am assuming you have a Windows PC and not a Mac. Either way it doesn’t matter, there are apps for both platforms.
I’ve never used this particular PC shareware app, but I trust the source from which it came. http://www.ephpod.com/ It will work on all flavors of Windows — 98SE and up.
If you’re on a Mac, go here –> http://www.scifihifi.com/podworks/
Good luck! And thanks for your service to our country!

As someone else pointed out you can use EphPod, http://www.ephpod.com/ but I have used this program and it is very good. EphPod is also freeware and not shareware so you don’t have to pay for it. You’ll have to go through iTunes and enable “iPod drive use” otherwise EphPod won’t see it. Then when you start EphPod you will select whichever drive letter Windows assigned to your iPod. Once you get into EphPod there will be an option to copy all songs to directory, do that and EphPod will being copying the songs on your iPod to whichever directory you chose.
Sometimes EphPod will appear to be “Not Responding” but my experience has been to let it continue working and it usually will finish.
Note that it will work on all iPods up to the iPod Photo but I am not sure about the 5G (Video) iPod, I see no reason why it shouldn’t.
Stay safe.

Quicker, easier, no software required:
1. Make sure iPod Disk Use is enabled.
2. Go to My Computer, double-click your iPod’s name.
3. Choose ‘Folder Options…’ from the menu, choose the second tab and enable hidden files.
4. ‘iPod_Control’ should appear. Open it.
5. Open ‘Music’.
6. Copy all the folders here to your hard drive. When you are done, open iTunes (being careful not to format your iPod) and choose Add Folder to Library from the File menu. Choose the folder your copied F01 etc files reside in, and bingo.

You should be able to copy them all using windows explorer. Windows recognizes your ipod as another drive upon connecting. Just drag and drop the files to your computer hard disk. In case the files on your ipod are from itunes use tunebite(download it from the net) to rip them to mp3.
