Is there a way to use the Internet updating option for Tivo listings without keeping computer always-on?
(As opposed to using dial-up phone connection for listings updates). My understanding is you have to keep a connection constantly on because unlike with dial-up, Tivo doesn’t give you a pre-determined download time or let you choose one, but instead pings your computer every few minutes or hours. Would like to be able to use the online option during the 2-3 hours every day I use my laptop with broadband connection, but not have to keep it constantly connected. (For security, power saving, and convenience of taking my laptop with me and not having it always tethered.)

You can connect your TiVo box directly to your wireless or wired router (assuming you have one) by connecting a network adapter to your TiVo box. Your PC doesn’t need to be connected to the network at all. The TiVo box will download the updates over the internet once a day and will check for new Remote Scheduling requests that you may have sent every 15 minutes or so.
If you have a wired network, start here:

If you have a wireless network, start here:

You can find the list of network adapters here:

There is also information about this in the Home Media Features guide at:

right on, sf.
if you want to connect it to your network you can do this occassionally without being connected all the time. go to tivo.com/adapters, and you can find a list that you can get for real cheap elsewhere from tivo. my sugg. is to get a usb dongle that you can plug in, hit connect to the tivo service (broadband usually takes no more than 10 mins) then you’re good to go. after you’re done just plug the card back in to your computer. i recommend though, to keep it on a connection at all times so you can real-time schedule online, and take advatage of the home media options.
