I would still recommend you still get a new laptop since the prices are dropping quickly and you can get a lot for your money. Wal-Mart has a Toshiba for $697, which comes with a 1.6 GHz and 512 MB RAM. It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. I use a 12" powerbook for mail and surfing when I am in front of the TV or on the road. You can not go wrong! Experience.
