Need help booting Laptop with Windows ME.?
While trying to upgrade an old Dell Latitude from Windows ME to Windows XP I went to the dell site which prompted me to delete several files that were not compatible with XP. I did so thinking Dell would know, and rebooted. Now It says some of my registry entries are missing and can’t find the CD rom. Tried Boot disk, that didn’t work either. PC goes to safe mode and never gets any farther than safe mode screen (no menus or icons at all). The laptop is Dell CPIa with swappable cdrom and floppy drives. Anybody know how I can make this thing boot since dos prompt not available on ME from start up?

If you have the original ME CD, I would recommend recovering it by formating your harddrive and reinstall your ME. You may want to make 2 partitions (C & D) and install ME and XP seperately. ME as FAT32 while XP as NTFS. Good luck. Hope you backup all your data before. Otherwise, use the bootdisk to go to C drive and backup everything onto an external harddrive via USB or firewire.

Where are you getting Win XP from? A CD I presume. Have you tried to just boot from the XP CD and forget about the ME part?
