This is part two of the review. Part one is here: www.youtube.com www.digitalhomethoughts.com Want to buy a dm3? http [Affiliate] This is my review video of the HP dm3; the dm3 is a new laptop from HP that’s an evolution of the dv2 – it’s thin, light, and not very expensive. It uses the AMD Athlon Neo X2 dual-core processor, a semi-low power processor that uses 18 watts of power, but delivers better performance than the Intel Atom processors found in netbooks. This particular model has 4 GB …

Ok thanks. The HP 311 will be able to handle Microsoft word without any problems?

A computer from five years ago could handle Microsoft Word without any problems. :-)

    OUch :\ That’s unfortunate :(
A month seems a bit too much..
What were you going to get it with??

If I have mine ordered out today, for example, I can have it by January 5.
    Is that not considered good?

I am also deciding between this or the mini311. Both built the way I want it would be around 600 so I need to choose. I will be using it for traveling alot and over my tdys and deployment coming up next month. Need something that can handle a bit more than everyday computing and can play hulu, etc shows and skype my wife with! Any advice on which one?

I’ve never done Skype chats on a netbook…I’m honestly not sure how the processor would handle it. The dm3 would probably be a better bet, but that touchpad is FUBAR so I’m hesitant to recommend the dm3. Overall I think the Mini 311 is a better product, but it might not have enough “oomph” for you.

thx for the very quick reply lol. Im actually on hp website trying to decide now. Well the touchpad doesnt bother me much. I always use a usb port mouse so if they had an option to remove the pad I would take it! With that said I think I am leaning toward the dm3. It seems to have the power im looking for dealing with web videos/mutitasking and very light gaming for the same price. the ddr2 vs ddr3 memory and the nvidiaion graphics vs the ATI Radeon has me a bit worried. Any thoughts? Thx again

If you’re looking at the dm3, the only option is the ATI Radeon graphics….looks like you’re considering the Intel-based version as well? I haven’t tested that version, but it would probably end up being better – but more expensive. If you go for the AMD version, go for the Radeon 4330 if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it. Don’t worry about DD2 vs. DD3, it doesn’t matter in a product like this.

also it would be the dm3t series I would be biulding so scratch that graphics card fight lol

  • ThoughtsMedia says:

OK, if you’re building the dm3t, then I’d go for this config:

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor SU7300 (1.3GHz, 3M Cache) with 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M

    4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

    320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

    Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth

You said you’re going to be deployed, so you might also want to get the external optical drive so you can install software, rip DVDs, etc.

    Merry Christmas. :-)

this particular laptop switches automatically to discreet graphics (the hd3200) when it is plugged in. it switches to a graphics similar to a built-in intel when it’s on batteries. I think you’ll get better performance when you play games on AC mode, not on battery mode. Will let you know when I get my dm3 from bestbuy next month.

sry I keep bugging you, but with talking to the boss(wife), i need to stay around 600. So a nicely equipped hp dm3t is out, and the mini 311 and dm3z are back in. I have read reviews of each sayin a decently built dm3z studders on hulu, shows, movies etc, where as a fully decked out mini 311 runs those fine (for a netbook). That and skype are the biggest things for me. And since I can get a top on the line mini311 and a moderate dm3z for the same price just need a bit more advice. Your my HERO!

  • ThoughtsMedia says:

The version I was sent only has the HD3200…so what you’re saying might be true for the version that has the HD4330, but that’s not the version I was sent. I saw no evidence on any of the spec sheets that this unit I tested had more than one GPU. Plus, I saw the same performance when I was testing it on AC power.

but you still dont think skype will work well with on a netbook? Which is equally important to me as streaming shows online. if i do buy the dm3z, i would get AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) with ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics. 3g ram, 320 Harddrive. wireless-N card. On the mini 311 everything would be maxed out lol

I did a quick Web search, and Skype on netbooks seems to be a common thing – and, in fact, I should have remembered that many netbook vendors ship Skype on their Linux-based models, so it must work. I can’t give you any more advice on what to buy – both will do what you want, you just need to make a decision. :-)

so i thought I would let you know what I bought. purchased a moderately built dm3z with AMD Turion(TM) Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 Processor (1.6GHz, 1MB) w/512MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 4330 Graphics, 3g ram, 320g HardDrive and wireless N card. Got it all for a bit more than the budget (hehehe) but I think i will be happy with that. Thanks alot for helping me decide

I heard that on this Laptop you’re able to watch tv on it and record without having to pay. Now I was wondering if i can make a request. Can you make a video comparing this laptop vs. the new mackbook pro? I’m kind of stuck whether i should get this or the apple. Any advice or tips? thanks!
