The best way to make it last longest is to make sure you let the battery drain. Fully recharge it and use it until it is completley drained. Just do that over and over and it should last a long time.
Many Ni-Cd and rechargables in general will last longer if you cycle up and down.
Do NOT always leave it at low power and try not to always leave it fully charged.
It all depends on what kind of battery you’re using
Currently there are 5 type of batteries found in portable computers.
1. Alkaline.
common batteries found in small devices such as TV remote controls and some palmtops
2. Nickel-Cadmium.
Rechargeable battery used in early portable computers. Had problems with memory effect.
3. Nickel-metal hydride.
Second generation of rechargeable battery used for portable computers. Has no problem with memory effect and holds a charge longer than the NiCd battery.
4.Lithium-Ion
Rechargeable battery found in most new portable computers. Has no problem with memory effect and holds a charge longer that NiCd and NiMH batteries.
5. Fuel cell a type of battery that uses hydrogen or methanol to produce electrical energy
Just in case you don’t know what memory effect means: It’s when a battery has to be fully drained before it can be recharged. Most commonly on NiCD
sometimes it took 12 hours to fully charge and you couldn’t unplug because of the memory effect. There was one good thing; expected life time was about 1,000 recharges
The ones that don’t suffer of memory effect have an expected life time of 500 recharges.
So choose your battery carefully!
I would agree with SAB on charging to the fullest when your battery running low. I just want to add one tip:
When you are using laptop at home (or places that you plug your adapter to charge), remove your latptop battery. So that the laptop battery won’t get overcharged. Overcharging shortens the life span of the battery.

Don’t shake the laptop or bump it too much; be nice to the cord, and it’s probably not good to leave the charge cord in all of the time
