What kind of notebook should my father buy?
My father wants to buy a new laptop. His budget is $3000 for a nice usable Windows system, he doesn’t like Mac or Linux. He’ll mostly be using it for work purposes; programming two-way radios. It should have a good processor, hard drive, and memory. Also he isn’t too sure on which brand of computer he wants. He likes my laptop which is a Dell, and really really dislikes his laptop which is a Vaio. So any suggestions on a good solid affordable notebook would be awesome! Thanks…

Wow, $3000, wish I had that kind of money. I can’t make a recommendation but you should check out any number of options at Cnet, reviewed and compiled for your shopping pleasure. Check out the reviews of all the ones around and under $3000 here, http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-3121_7-0.html?filter=100021_13182932_&?tag=dir.price.all&sort=edRating7+desc but this one is my favorite, http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_VAIO_VGN_TX670P/4505-3121_7-31516598.html?tag=pdtl-list but check out the reviews of the others at the first link and I think you will be able to find something that suits his needs.

Well, with 3 grand to spend, he ought to be able to get a great one.
For that kind of money, you really have some good choices. Do you want it lightweight so it will be easy to carry? Do you want a big (17″) monitor? Do you want lots of bells and whistles, like DVD burner, bigger battery, better warranty? He’ll be able to get his with a Centrino processor, which is designed to perform with lower power consumption and is perfect for wireless networking.
You mentioned he liked your Dell. I have a Dell as well (Inspiron 600m) and love it. I have had no complaints with any of their products, and we now use Dell exclusively at work. It’s probably a good place to start.
Check out the selection and see if you can help him get something he will really use and enjoy!

You don’t say whether the budget includes software (like Office) or not, but either way $3,000 is too much to spend. I’d recommend getting a Thinkpad T43 with 1GB of memory. If you include Office Professional, that’s about $2,300. I’d spend the rest of the money on accessories, such as a small portable hard drive for backup and to carry data around.
