What’s the best wireless router with at least 4 ports?
Looking for the best wireless router in terms of compatibility, dependability and signal strength.
I have a fairly new Linksys router and I constantly lose the signal on 2 different laptops. Nothing wrong with the wireless cards in either laptop.
Thanks.
Thanks for the answers so far.
In case it helps narrow things down, I live in a very remote area (can see for miles around my house) so security is of minimal importance, but signal strength and speed are a major concern.
Thanks again.
Thanks for the advice, Richard. The old router doesn’t have any output ports on the back and I am needing some, so I am moving that router to a be used somewhere else anyway and plan to purchase one with ports. I just want to be sure I get a good one.
Haven’t done any diagnostics on the signal strength other than seeing that it says “weak” in the system tray.

I have a NetGear wireless router and I like it so far no troubles.. I got it at Best Buy.
I had a Linksys before and lost signal on my laptop frequently too.

This one is very tough. I’ve used many wireless routers with many different wireless adapters and always get different results.
My favorite was a D-Link, but I’ve had one Sony computer not like that router. I’ve had Linksys’s work fine with that Sony, but not other laptops. I’ve also used no-name brands with very good results. (can you tell I do this for a living?)
Personally I don’t think 802.11 was ready for prime time. Too flakey in many ways, and very un-safe with the requirement to manually setup security. But, most proprietary solutions are no longer available.
Just get a new one, and try it. But make sure you buy from a store that allows returns.

Before scrapping your Linksys router, try a different channel. You can get the info to do this from the Linksys site. Different environments sometimes require using a different channel (often channel 10 instead of channel 6, for example). Have you run diagnostics on the signal strength?

If you get a linksys wrt54g version 3 or lower, or a wrt54gs, you can upload a diferent modified firmware to the router, such as dd-wrt or openwrt. Then you can increase your transmission power up to 400% Connection issues would be a minimal problem after that.
