Why my DVD drive SONY DVD+-RW DW-D56A fails recording DVD and freezes playing video on Dell Inspiron 2200?

I was able to successfully record only one DVD – after then all recording attempts failed. Also video frequently freezes when playing even brand new DVDs. Spent 5 hrs on-line with Dell support. Their suggestions were: reset the DVD drive; 2) Remove upper and lower filters in the Registry; 3) install a new video Driver; 4) run HW tests. We stopped at the point where they recommended to re-format the HD and reinstall the OS. They finally offered to send a replacement DVD drive which i’m currently waiting for.

Does anybody know the actual reasons of such DVD drive behavior. The laptop is 2 months old. OS is Win XP Home Edition. I’m using Sonic software for recording.
Any technical comments are welcome !

Because you have a Dell computer… I have heard that they are not good ones. I dont know personally, though.

Most of the time it’s because they are tried to the same bus as the hard drive and using them both at the same time will cause it to fail when recording and freeze up. best thing to do is have the least amoutnt of items running both on the tray and desktop also check startup and remove all unneeded items, also do a regedit and check software>windows> current version> run and take out the things you dont need in there. and before you do anything make sure you have a backup!
