For typing and email, almost anything will do. Dell has many great offers out, or you can go to Ebay and purchase from one of the many companies there that sell laptops that are off-lease. These seem to work out nicely, as they do go over them and a couple offer warranties.

Based on your needs, any laptop (except acer and gateway) less than $499 will do. There are some IBM refurbished laptops as well at IBM website (with additional discounts from time to time).

Every laptop has this capability. However, Macs tend to be heavier than Sony, Toshiba, etc, cause the material in the casing used. But the more you pay, the better, and lightly it is. VAIO has a new laptop out thats ultra thin, and weights about a pound. The wallet gots to weight more though.

it does depend on your budget, how much are you willing to give out when you buy one? cause itll just cost you more when you say that you just want this for now and then later on you will add some more, ive worked for a computer company then in sales deparment, and ive talked to a lot of people who doesnt really know anything about computers, but then they want this and that and they want it to be as cheap as it can get. my only advice is that, it will really depend on what you want in your computer, what you are going to use it for, and how much you are willing to give out, if its only for typing and saving stuff, you would need a big enough storage for you to save your files even pictures and movie files and anything else that you want to save in your computer, second you would need a fast enough processor and memory to help your harddrive and the performance of your notebook and of course since you dont want something heavy, you can get one of sony they have one of the lightest notebooks for 2.75lbs, dell has 4lbs the lightest they can go. buy a notebook that can last you for a long time, also dont forget warranty, it is really helpful, just in case something happens, like if you accidentally dropped it, or slipped out of your bag or case,,or spilled coffee or whatever.. better have warranty, cause some do offer accidental damage for a laptop, so incase sh^t happens they will replace it with no charge. just that you should have a notebook that is flexible and durable enough, dont buy those that are almost obsolete, at least invest on something that you can upgrade someday if you want to, cause if you buy a $499, $599 system, it has limited capacity and capability to hold as much programs, and even files. soo.. its really up to you,,, choose wisely..=)
